It appears as the “new” trend in the world of
virtual websites.

Try this activity: Put these paragraphs in the order they
are heard in the videoclip below:
A) She spends twelve hours a day immersed in Second
Life, running a successful retailer that sells a collection
of clothing, jewelry, pets, artwork and accesories.
She said that she knew there was a business
opportinity in SL before she joined it and that she
had been looking forward to a platform of
this sort. She explains that things work the same
as in the real world, having to find the right
location for the business, advertising, etc.
The speaker then sounds more than amazed when he
says that the bizarre thing is that she earns a living with this!
B) SL community is not all about making money but
to meet people and boredom can be swept aside by
your virtual character. …As an anonymous character
you have no rules, no boundaries.
With all that socialising it’s no surprise that
relationships are formed!
“Now this is what I find really weird:
People are having virtual relationships in SL with
people they’ve never met in the real world, ….some
people are getting even married and forming virtual
families!”
“I make contacts with people I have never
met before, or spoken on the telephone and we are
running business in this 3D virtual world. “
C) Think of SL as the internet going 3D and instead
of visiting a website you can now send your avatar
into virtual space to perform tasks for you or you
can just use it to have fun.
D ) A virtual world where you can
create your own character and build a whole new
image for yourself. You create the character you want
to be, buy virtual real estate to set up a virtual shop,
this is the place where anything is possible, including
making a virtual living.
E) SL is an environment that encourages people, it’s an
environment that can educate you. It’s an environment
where you can go into business with…3 friends that you
met there over a weekend and have a successful business
over a week later or a fail….”
